Stake Day of Service 2025
Stake members participate in a variety of projects for Day of Service 2025
To commemorate National Day of Service and Remembrance this year, members of the Salem Oregon Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints partnered with Salem for Refugees, the City of Salem, and the City of Stayton to spread out around our communities to serve in many ways.
More than seventy stake members—of all ages—helped to beautify and renovate The Taylor House, a residence owned by Salem For Refugees, where newly arrived refugees from around the world can stay while they look for more permanent housing. Participants built a new fence, cleaned up around the exterior of the house, and installed bark dust. In addition, volunteers painted the entire interior of the home—including the ceilings. These activities took place on Tuesday, September 9, Friday September 12, and Saturday, September 13.
Also on Saturday, twenty-one member-volunteers participated in a project marking storm drains around Salem with the message, “Dump No Waste; Drains To Creek.” Participants chose where in town they wanted to work, including areas in South Salem and Downtown. Another Saturday project took place at the Stayton Community Center Park, where thirty-one people—including children—weeded flowerbeds, trimmed trees and spread bark dust to renew the area around the community center and library.
Stake members who were unable to join in one of these events were encouraged to create their own service opportunities or to access JustServe as a resource, and to serve in whatever way they could. Families and individuals can turn to JustServe and select from one of the 130 different local service opportunities found on that platform. On this 2025 Day of Service—and every day—we can find ways to contribute to our communities as we partner with other organizations and with our neighbors.

Brother Stephen Scott Bertoch
Stephen Scott Bertoch passed away September 29th, 2025 after 18 years of battling Alzheimer’s disease, surrounded by his loving family in Provo, Utah. Steve devoted himself to the gospel. His committed legacy to serve and love others blessed the lives of all who knew him.
Steve was born in Pocatello, Idaho to Vivian (Bert) and Gladys Bertoch on July 23rd,1949. He grew up there with his two brothers Jack and Mike, and sister Joanne. In Steve’s early years of life it was much spent in sports, fishing and hunting. He grew a passion for golf and serving his Heavenly Father. In the year of 1968 he left to serve a mission in Scotland. A mission that brought much joy to him even in later years of his life.
In 1974 Steve graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelors of science in social work. He would then later attend University of Utah to complete his masters in social work. Although a degree in social work became a much rewarding accomplishment and blessing, Steve considered meeting his loving wife Sandy at a BYU dance his most greatest blessing next to his relationship with his Heavenly Father.
They were married in the Oakland, California LDS temple on June 17th, 1972. He referred to this as a sacred day. They were blessed with 4 children through adoption. Steve remained an ever devoted husband, father and then grandfather. Although being blessed with great grandchildren after the progression of his disease, he found joy in the love he shared for them with his wife that always helped him to remember.
Steve spent his life fulfilling his purpose here on earth by doing the Lord's work in all aspects of his life; through his profession with Lamanite Placement, LDS Family Services and his personal life with family and friends. He shared his love of the Savior and serving others.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Dignity Home Health and Hospice for their loving care and support.
Steve is survived by his wife, Sandra, their 4 children: Melissa, Daniel, David, and Jared, 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents Vivian (Bert) and Gladys Bertoch and siblings Jack and Mike Bertoch.
